THE 8TH ANNUAL

NO DEAD ARTISTS

"A Juried Exhibition of Louisiana Art Today"
Co-sponsored by Gambit Weekly

Jonathan Ferrara gallery is proud to announce the opening of what is now a New Orleans tradition - the annual NO DEAD ARTISTS exhibition opening Saturday September 6, 2003 with a reception from 6 - 10 pm. Art lovers will come to The Crescent City for the unveiling of this much anticipated exhibition reflecting new, fresh and innovative talent present in New Orleans and beyond. This year's competition was expanded from the metro New Orleans area to the entire state of Louisiana and the result is a stellar exhibition filled with diversity and talent. Jury winners will be featured in an article in Gambit Weekly the week of September 2nd written by D. Eric Bookhardt showing highlights from the show and will feature several of the jury winner's works in print.

For the past eight years, No Dead Artists has provided the New Orleans community with a real pulse on the current art scene happening in the city. No Dead Artists was founded in late 1995 by Jonathan Ferrara and Alex Beard to give a new voice to New Orleans art. Each year hundreds of artists working in a variety of mediums submit their work to a jury of arts professionals who choose the works to be in the exhibition. This year over 220 artists submitted over a thousand works of art and 43 were chosen for the show by the jurors David S. Rubin, Visual Arts Curator, Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans; Don Marshall, Director UNO Arts & Administration Program; Erik Neil, Director of the Newcomb Art Gallery, Tulane University; Ann Zatarain, Gallery Director of the Jonathan Ferrara gallery and of course, Jonathan Ferrara. Jury selections were tough this year due to the overall excellence of submissions. All pieces chosen have unique creative vision and include painting, sculpture, ceramics, metal work, mixed media, photography, bookmaking, video and installation art.

No Dead Artists has become THE place to find the next great artists emerging in the Louisiana art scene. Several past jury winners have gone to gain prominence after being exposed to the public through this great show. Sandy Chism, a 1999 winner, has gone on to have several solo exhibitions, has been reviewed in ART IN AMERICA, had a 10-Year Survey at the CAC and had a piece purchased by NOMA for the museum's permanent collection. Michelle Elmore a 2000 winner went on to have a solo exhibition and was featured in the 2001 Louisiana Open at the CAC. In 2001, Matthew Cox was the standout; he went on to produce one of the top ten exhibitions of the year according The Times-Picayune and has also been included in the permanent collection of NOMA. Who will be the next standout in the current field of 43 artists - you will have to come and see for yourself!

The 8th Annual No Dead Artists, a juried exhibition of Louisiana Art Today, opens to the public at 841 Carondelet St., New Orleans, with a reception to meet the artists on Saturday September 6, 2003, 6-10pm.
